Nikki Kettle bringing colour to people’s homes through her ‘shelf-made’ products

08 Dec 2022

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the most effective.  Nikki Kettle knew her colourful shelves and crafts were a hit when her Instagram inbox started filling up with requests. Her floating colourful shelves which started as a simple DIY project in Your Home & Garden magazine has transformed into a colourful business with a long shelf life.

“I just loved the shelves so much, as did everyone who saw them. I had so many requests to start selling them that I decided to refine the design,” says Nikki.

“I wanted to make them sleeker, more colourful, strong, low waste, more fun and more affordable. From there; Troupe Design and Interiors was born.”

The most popular shelf at Troupe ‘Chasing Coral’, painted in Resene Coral Tree.

Designed to be zero waste, the shelves are cut to size by Nikki by hand so there is very little waste. The shelves are etch primed and then painted in Resene Lusta-Glo, a high quality, hard wearing Resene paint.

“[These shelves] are in my opinion an awesome product, super versatile and a super sleek addition of colour to any home,” says Nikki. “I have been so grateful to have brands like Resene get behind me, support me, and promote both my products and me personally.”

“I am making them locally so they have a small footprint and so I can make a high-end product without the high price tag. I also source my recyclable packaging and labels from local sources,” says Nikki.

Troupe Design and Interiors founder Nikki’s goal is to provide items that are unique, high-quality, and sustainable, and that bring life and joy into your home, while remaining affordable.

Nikki’s shelves come in a range of colours and she bases the names of her products off Resene paint names. For example Resene Wonderland is ‘Alice in Wonderland and Resene Gun Powder is ‘Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels’.

As well as the colourful shelves Nikki also creates custom murals and lip-shaped prints, all made in in father’s workshop.

“I created a website and the items on it to bring a bit of joy and colour into people’s homes. If I had to look at one more beige and white abstract piece of mass produced art I was going to scream,” says Nikki.

“I think every person should be able to have a piece of art in their home, it shouldn’t just be for the rich and famous.”

Nikki is dedicated to keep creating new products and artwork that will enable you to transform your space with colour. She plans to release seasonal colours for her shelves and has plenty more ideas in the pipeline.
