Brigita Botma’s Resene Nature Mural refreshing Pukekohe Town Centre

27 Oct 2022

Pukekohe has a colourful new mural for its town centre, created by Auckland artist Brigita Botma, winner of the Keep New Zealand Beautiful and Resene Nature Murals Competition 2022.

One of ten winners countrywide, Brigita was inspired by her respect and pride for our environment, and passion for eliminating pollution. The mural, titled Harmony, features a pīwakawaka and tūī with a backdrop blending urban and natural with harakeke, kõwhai and põhutukawa flowers against Auckland city’s skyline. The tūī is proudly flying a banner that reads “Natural and urban environments can exist in harmony. Let’s make it happen!”

Brigita used all Resene bright primary colours mixed together to create the different shades used on the BNZ wall. “I also used my mini spray unit that I bought at Resene, and watered-down Resene paint to create some of the ‘airbrushed’ effects,” she says.

Brigita, who is from Waiuku and spends a lot of time in the area, thinks Pukekohe is the perfect place for this message about existing in environmental harmony, with its strong mix of urban and natural environments. “Pukekohe has put a huge effort into beautifying their town and preventing graffiti, so it was great to help them through this initiative,” says Brigita. “They are grateful to Keep New Zealand Beautiful and Resene for helping them to beautify a graffiti-prone spot through this competition.”

The Keep New Zealand Beautiful and Resene Nature Murals Competition ran from April to June, encouraging artists around the country to submit mural designs featuring an environmental message for a wall in their local community. The ten winning designs then bring their idea to life using Resene paints.
