Pantone Colour of the Year giving vibrant vibes

08 Dec 2022

Fearless, brave and vivacious, winner of Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2023, Viva Magenta 18-1750, brings joy and strength to the year ahead.

A bold descendent of the red family, magenta gives us vibrations of power, spirit and resilience, while also exuding feelings of love, joy and fun says the colour institute. It is a colour we need in 2023 after overcoming so much hardship in the past few years.

“The Colour of the Year 2023 speaks to our desire to take on new challenges and try the unconventional while meeting others with compassion,” says Pantone.

This hybrid red gives off both warm and cool tones. Red tones are often associated with passion, love and power, and this vibrant shade gives us both rebellion and softness all in one.

Want to bring a bit of vibrant Viva Magenta into your own home? Try colours like Resene Scrumptious, Resene Geronimo, Resene Pohutukawa or Resene Colour Me Pink.

For layered colours in a similar palette try starting with a lighter elegant tone like Resene Vanilla Ice, then working up to a playful coral shade like Resene Paper Doll, followed by a bolder pink red like Resene Geronimo.

Rich Resene Pohutukawa walls gives us Viva Magenta vibes, softened by a circle painted bedhead in Resene Dust Storm. Blue-based, burgundy reds are less energetic than tomato reds, making them more serene for bedrooms. A floor painted in Resene Double Rice Cake is also a great balance to the rich walls. The bedside table is painted in Resene Sakura and the vase is painted in Resene Sauvignon.

Pantone recommends interior designers and homeowners harness Viva Magenta through a statement velvet couch or feature wall. If you’re a more neutral loving person, try a striking floral arrangement in your dining room or a bold abstract canvas in your entry way or living room.
