Say hello to glorious yellow

It brings warmth and playfulness to every room, whether it's the shade of pineapple or a gold-y hue. Look around interior stores and magazines, and you'll notice how popular yellow has become for homeowners... perfect for a jolt of colour on feature walls, or accent pops on staircases and front doors.

Pastel yellows have stepped aside for golden yellows, with deeper, muddier tones coming up on top – think Resene Good As Gold, Resene Celebrate and Resene Good Morning. On the other side of the scale, bigger, brighter yellows are also proving to be popular, from Resene Wild Thing to Resene Happy.

Here are our tips for using today's yellows:

  • When you use yellow on walls, it reflects on itself and the colour becomes more intense. If you're going for full walls, look into duskier yellows, those tipping into bronze, terracotta and clay. Look to Resene Tussock, Resene Putty or Resene Hot Toddy.

  • Yellow is being used more as an accent colour than ever before, and in deeper, punchier colours. Don't be afraid to go bold!

  • Front doors, French country chairs, vases, newell posts, coat hooks – standout yellows are perfect for these. Go for Resene Broom and Resene Spotlight... or for a retro/country look, try a green-based yellow such as Resene Sunflower.

  • For both brighter and duskier yellows, you can't go wrong with adding inky blues and greyed greens into the mix, including Resene Zinzan, Resene Coast and Resene Inside Back.

  • When it comes to complementary neutrals, pair dusky yellows with warmer whites, such as Resene Good As Gold with Resene Quarter Spanish White. Match brighter yellows with cooler whites, such as Resene Turbo with Resene Alabaster.

  • Yellow metals like gold and bronze have become more on trend as well, moving away from silver and chrome.
