Hawke’s Bay takes a bite out of the Big Apple with fruity art trail

05 Oct 2022

Take a stroll around Hastings this spring and you may come across some fallen apples. But these are not your regular, juicy golden apples – these fruity delights are large scale, sculptured apples decorated by 20 of Hawke’s Bay’s top artists.

A celebration of Hawke’s Bay apple growers, in the biggest apple growing region in New Zealand, The Big Apple Project is on display until the end of October. It is brought to Hastings by Art Inc Heretaunga, Studio Benega & The Hawke’s Bay Art Festival and is proudly supported by Resene paints and colours.

The organisers aim to bring together local artists, businesses, and communities by celebrating the success of the apple industry. By following the trail around Hastings, and into Havelock North, you can learn about the core of the amazing apple industry as well as the talented creatives behind the project. On the next sunny Hawke’s Bay day, download the trail map, pack a picnic, and follow the apple road for a fun, free art gallery experience.

The Apple Project will conclude with a public auction on 26 October, so if an apple catches your eye – you can have your slice! It is hoped that the apples will end up in private art collections, along with businesses wanting to own a unique representation and celebration of Hawke’s Bay creativity and a great local industry.
