Reviving a traditional bungalow: An elegant and timeless design for a Ponsonby home

As with many older homes, especially those that haven’t been renovated in over 50 years, there are often unforeseen hurdles. Interior designer, Katie Scott, doesn’t let this stop her creating the dream for her clients, and with a bit of skill, love, and Resene paint, she has created an absolute stunner in this Ponsonby home.

Her clients, Eden and Lisa, love renovating, and also have some experience doing up homes themselves. They knew this traditional bungalow needed some love after being a rental for many years, and the yellowy colour on the walls just wasn’t cutting it.

Steering clear of any major renovations and with a goal to stick to budget, this smaller house was given a larger feel through creating an open plan space and adding a LouvreTec roof to the exterior to extend the living area.

Katie’s clients had a love for villas, so she chose a mix of soft and deep greys with whites and neutrals to create a classic and timeless look.

“Every project is different,” Katie says. “As a designer I make sure my choices fit the brief, but I also like to be sympathetic to the home’s era when choosing colours and décor, so if it’s a villa with a contemporary feel I also like to include qualities from that villa’s era.”

The kitchen, which ended up being one of Katie’s favourite rooms in the house, was given a slightly darker feel to add depth and interest to the space. Resene Fuscous Grey, a burnt charcoal grey with a modern edge, was used on the cabinetry, and also extended out to the scullery and paneling under the kitchen island.

The different grey tones in the splashback tiling and marble benchtop reflect the darker cabinetry as well as the lighter walls painted in Resene Sea Fog, a white with a hint of grey. This is an interior colour palette that was well thought out and implemented with precision.

The scullery, which used to be a laundry room, was opened up and now doubles as both. This extra space now makes the kitchen feel larger and more accessible, especially with the Resene Fuscous Grey extending out to both areas.

“We kept the ceiling beams exposed to give more of a sense of height to the space instead of a flat ceiling, and used Resene Alabaster to brighten the ceiling and create even more space,” Katie says.

A unique touch was added to the living room which also pays homage to the ‘bungalow’ or ‘villa’ aesthetic. The green stained-glass window reflects the afternoon sunlight on the Resene Sea Fog walls, create a green tinted oasis that is soothing and serene.

“I love greens, and I absolutely love Resene Ravine at the moment,” Katie says. “Resene Karaka, although a darker shade, is also a favourite and is currently covering half the walls and kitchen in my new home.”

Every renovation has its challenges, and for this home it was unforeseen plumbing issues. A burst pipe at the beginning stages may have been enough to throw off others, but Katie managed to work through it and push on with her work, and it certainly did not take away from the end design.

Interior designer and mum Katie is now busy renovating and designing a new home for herself in Taupo Bay. She would describe her interior style as artsy and sympathetic to a home’s era and architecture, for example, when designing in a mid-century house, she likes to make sure it still has a mid-century feel even if the design is modern - some great advice that ensures a home always feels true to itself, no matter what the design or theme.

“We ended up with quite a classic look, but not too outrageous,” Katie says. “The homeowners were very happy with the result.”

Top tip: If you like to wipe your ceilings to keep them clear of fly spots and the like, choose flat waterborne Resene SpaceCote Flat Fly Deterrent for your ceiling.  It’s tough enough for general living areas in your home so you can wipe ceilings clean without burnishing the finish like normal ceiling paint.  The fly deterrent doesn’t harm the flies, it just discourages them from sitting.  The less they sit, the smaller and fewer the fly spots.

The striking charcoal grey kitchen with a blue edge creates a modern vibe in this 1930s bungalow. Resene Fuscous Grey was used in the kitchen, with Resene Sea Fog on the walls and Resene Alabaster on the ceiling. The gold finishes add a touch of luxury to this contemporary space.

The darker shade extends out to the scullery and under the kitchen island making the kitchen feel larger and more spacious. Resene Fuscous Grey was used in the kitchen, with Resene Sea Fog on the walls and Resene Alabaster on the ceiling.

The grey tones in the splashback and marble benchtop reflect the darker cabinetry painted in Resene Fuscous Grey, as well as the lighter walls painted in Resene Sea Fog.

This now open plan living is made more spacious and brighter with the walls painted in Resene Sea Fog and ceiling in Resene Alabaster. At the end of the hallway is the striking front door painted in Resene All Black.

The hallway is now painted in Resene Sea Fog, a timeless white that opens the space, and the Resene Alabaster brightens the ceiling clearly showing the bungalows original detailing. The front door is painted in Resene All Black.

The unique stained-glass windows added in the lounge create a green glow in the afternoon sun against the white walls painted in Resene Sea Fog.

A simple and distinguished silver-grey, Resene Surrender, was used on the walls of this bedroom. This calm and serene shade pairs well with the Resene Alabaster ceiling and neutral fabrics and décor.

The dark shade of the tiles in this bathroom mimic the grey shade used in the kitchen creating a cohesive look throughout the house, with white tiles on surrounding walls and Resene Alabaster on the ceiling.
