Bloesem Early Learning: A nurturing palette for growing minds
11 Feb 2025
Right in the heart of Mount Maunganui, Bloesem Early Learning is anything but your usual childcare centre – it’s a space designed to foster connection, calm and creativity. Guided by the values of whanaungatanga (relationships), taiao (environment) and rangatiratanga (self-confidence), the centre’s philosophy is reflected in every element of its interior.
When interior designer Kathrine McDonald was briefed to transform a tired, existing building into a vibrant yet restful learning space, she knew the environment had to be nurturing for young minds, and a key element in the redesign was ensuring that the interiors felt organic, sensory and welcoming.
Owner-operator Alicia envisioned a space that was free from artificiality – no plastic, just natural materials and textures that would create a soothing atmosphere. “As someone who loves a muted, natural canvas, our ideas really gelled,” says Kathrine. “We agreed on a saturated aesthetic that was restful rather than poppy – an important choice for a high-energy environment filled with little ones.”
To achieve this, Kathrine curated a colour palette using Resene paints that complemented the natural elements within the centre, such as the towering trees incorporated as vertical features. The chosen hues provided a soft backdrop, allowing the rich greenery to take centre stage while still adding warmth and depth to each space.
The energetic burnt orange hue, Resene Twizel, was used in a cosy break-out zone within the centre.
Throughout the building, Resene Half Rice Cake was used as a neutral backdrop to allow different zones and pops of colour to stand out.
One of the defining aspects of the project was the integration of artwork by local artist Jasmine Kroeze. Her expressive, nature-inspired murals – crafted using Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen – became a pivotal design element. “I love her creativity and colour spectrum,” says Kathrine. “We used her art as a design directive.”
Jasmine, a long-time user of Resene paints, says, “Resene Lumbersider is my go-to product. It offers so many benefits, from its impeccable quality to its versatility – it’s perfect for my mural projects. With testpot sizes available, I can effortlessly incorporate a multitude of colours and achieve a mesmerising range of hues within my artwork.”
Artist Jasmine Kroeze’s wall mural features playful patterns and tones in Resene Sante Fe, Resene Beethoven, Resene Half Beethoven, Resene Cashmere and Resene Quarter Tea.
The dining area features more creative patternspainted in Resene Hairy Heath, Resene Twizel, Resene Rocky Mountain and Resene Wafer creating a welcoming and intimate setting.
Each zone within Bloesem was carefully considered. In the mat zone, a warm and inviting mix of Resene Sante Fe, Resene Beethoven, Resene Half Beethoven, Resene Cashmere and Resene Quarter Tea was used, the dining zone features rich, earthy tones such as Resene Hairy Heath, Resene Twizel, Resene Rocky Mountain and Resene Wafer creating a grounded, intimate setting and the breakout zone is painted in a statement shade of Resene Twizel providing a cosy yet energising retreat. The stairwell boasts Resene Bitter for depth and contrast, the roller door wall is painted in Resene Raptor, injecting an industrial yet cohesive feel to the exterior and the reception and main walls are adorned in the classic, calming neutral of Resene Half Rice Cake.
At the reception, children and families are greeted by warm Resene Half Rice Cake painted on walls with playful lighting and gentle tones.
The soft olive green of Resene Bitter creates a calm and grounding space for young minds to learn and play.
Transforming an entire early learning centre is no small feat, and the challenge was intensified by an exceptionally tight timeframe. “The exchange of ownership meant that I had from Saturday to Monday to complete everything – from tiling to furniture!” says Kathrine. “I needed a paint that would apply seamlessly with a pristine finish and that wouldn’t leave lingering fumes by the time the children arrived. That’s why I turned to Resene – I knew I could trust the high-quality products to deliver.”
The result is a beautifully balanced environment that aligns with Bloesem’s ethos – one where children can explore, play and grow in a space designed just for them. Through the calming neutrals and gentle warmth of accented hues, every element of Bloesem’s interior serves a purpose – creating a place where young minds can flourish.
