Choosing paint or stain colours for the exterior of your home can be a little daunting. It's a significant investment and colours need to not only suit your home's architecture and your personality, but stand the test of time. That's why our team of Resene colour experts has created a collection of Superior Exterior colour palettes to help you with this big decision. The 30 colour palettes are organised by the house architecture type and into three colour strengths: Nice and Neutral, A Touch of Colour and Colour Lover.

The weatherboards of this Auckland Villa are painted in Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Siam to tie in with the stained glass. The trims and balustrade are painted in Resene Double Sea Fog and the concrete steps are in Resene Gravel. Project by SGA, image by Simon Devitt.

Resene colour consultant Ruth Whiunui and painters/contractors Asset Property Services were the fairy godmothers for this Auckland home’s transformation.  The homeowners wanted a colour scheme that was crisp, sharp and modern and opted for weatherboards in Resene Half Grey Chateau, joinery and soffits in Resene Black White, front door in Resene Black and roof in Resene Half Tuna.

Although its dramatic roof, which points over the landscape to the sea, could only be described as contemporary, Parirau by architect Pete Bossley of Bossley Architects also feels like a traditional home thanks to its use of colour. The cedar cladding is stained in Resene Woodsman Totem Pole, a colour reminiscent of traditional rural barns, and the dramatic soffits are in Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta. Image by Simon Devitt.

Conservation architect Chessa Stevens and her partner Rob restored this property to its original glory. Chessa and Rob run Rare Buildings, a local company that specialises in designing and restoring historic homes. When working on this villa, they chose their exterior paint colour palette carefully, painting the weatherboards in Resene Half Delta, the window trim, doors and details in Resene Grey Friars and the facings, fascias and corner boards in Resene White.

Restoring this character villa in Oamaru has been a labour of love for Cameron. The renovations, completed over several years, include painting the weatherboards in Resene Periglacial Blue, trims in Resene Black White, doors in Resene Double Foundry and the roof in Resene Grey Friars.

Exterior trims in Resene Alabaster to protect them for as long as possible.” Weatherboards in Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection with window trims and soffits in Resene Alabaster.

Best exterior Resene products

Low sheen dream: Resene Lumbersider is a durable waterborne paint, ideal for harsh exterior conditions. Use Resene Lumbersider for various outdoor projects, including weatherboards, fences and brickwork. The low sheen finish helps to hide surface imperfections.

Sleek style: Resene Sonyx 101 is a waterborne exterior semi-gloss ideal for highlighting architectural features. Its higher-sheen finish is easier to clean than a low sheen making it a popular option for walls and weatherboards.

Stain and able: Highlight the natural beauty of timber with Resene Waterborne Woodsman. This exterior wood stain enhances, rejuvenates and protects timber from the elements while allowing its grain to show through.

Wonderful windows: Protect windowsills, doors and other exterior trims with Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss or Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel. Both are easy to clean. The gloss finish will make colours seem brighter and cleaner, ideal for a pop of colour on your front door. The semi-gloss finish is more sympathetic to less-than-perfect surfaces, like wooden joinery.

Get decked out: Resene Woodsman Decking Oil Stain is designed especially for pine, macrocarpa and other timber decks. It has fewer fumes and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) than traditional solventborne stains. It’s available in a wide range of hues, including Resene CoolColours, ideal for dark decks, which get hot over summer.

For all of these finishes, many colours, especially dark ones, are available in heat-reflective Resene CoolColours to keep the paint, stain and surface cooler.
