Wood you be my Valentine? DIY wooden love couple

It comes around every year. Valentine’s Day, a day to celebrate our love for a special person and those around us. It can be easy to feel bombarded by advertising and pressured to spend a lot, so why not make something yourself? That way it’s not just the sentimental thought that counts – but also the effort! It can be kept on display or brought out each year as a token of your love. Try this DIY wooden love couple to celebrate the romantic day this year.

What you need:

  • A length of dowel which is 3cm x 3cm thick
  • 2 large wooden beads (these ones are 4cm in diameter)
  • Glue
  • Resene testpot brush
  • Twine of string
  • Small wooden heart
  • Resene testpot paints in colours of your choice. We used Resene Red Hot, Resene Cabaret and Resene Thorndon Cream
  • Resene Aquaclear (optional for the wooden heads)

Steps:

Step 1: Cut your wood so you have one piece 25cm in length and another 22cm in length.

Step 2: Paint your pieces of wood in your chosen Resene colours. We painted our tallest piece of wood in Resene Red Hot, and our shortest piece in Resene Cabaret. You might need two coats of paint for best coverage.

If you have favourite colours, you might choose to paint one piece in your partner’s favourite colour and one piece in your favourite colour.

Step 3: Paint your wooden heart in your chosen Resene colour. We used Resene Thorndon Cream.

Paint your wooden beads in the same colour, another colour of your choice or if you want to see the wood grain finish then clear finish them with Resene Aquaclear (gloss, semi-gloss, satin or natural finish), which will help make them easier to keep clean.

Step 4: Tie your twine or string around the two pieces of wood and secure with a knot at the back.

Step 5: Glue your painted heart onto the wooden pieces over the string.

Step 6: Glue the painted or clear finished wooden beads on top of the wooden pieces as the heads.

The finished love couple, painted in Resene Red Hot, Resene Cabaret and Resene Thorndon Cream for the heart and wooden beads clear finished in Resene Aquaclear Natural. The tealight holder is in Resene Hopbush and the table and wall are painted in Resene Quarter Blanc. Vase leaves from Adairs.
