There might be a lot going on in this blue toned dining room, but it proves that you don’t need a lot of space to create a well-designedarea in your home. Colour Expert Nikki Morris emphasises the use of a monochromatic colour scheme, pointing out that they work extremely well in small spaces allowing the eye to move easily around the room without obvious interruption by other colours. This can alter your perception of dimension and can make an interior seem more spacious. “Use subtle contrasting colour to define the areas within an open plan space,” says Nikki. “You can use the same family in varying strengths for different areas.”

Try defining smaller spaces in your home, such as your dining room or living room, using colour. If you’re going dark, try varying strengths of Resene Masala, a smoky grey brown. For a lighter scheme, try varying strengths of delicious Resene Truffle

There are not many places where you can’t fit a chair and table – or even just the chair! Make your very own reading nook in that little corner of the house that won’t fit anything else. To separate it from other areas, choose a colour palette or theme just for that space, like this green nature inspired corner using Resene Wallpaper Collection A54701, paired with a plush green chair and matching pouf. Whatever your style, we’re sure you will find your dream wallpaper amongst Resene’sextensive wallpaper collection. Here are four to get you inspired – (from left) Resene Wallpaper Collection2109-156-04, 2109-153-03, SUM303 and SUM104.

The wall is painted in Resene Comfortably Numb, flooring in ReseneColorwood Shade and ReseneColorwood Mid Greywash, cubby shelving in Resene Quarter Chicago mixed with Resene FX Paint Effects medium, chairs in Resene Dark Slate and Resene Emerge and vases in Resene Emerge, Resene Longitude, Resene Haven and Resene Dark Slate. If you live in a studio flat, or a home with not many rooms, try sectioning off areas with things like rooms dividers and shelving, or different coloured flooring. We stained our wooden floor in a lighter colour, Resene Colorwood Mid Greywash, to define the living room and sitting area, and stained the other areas in the darker hue of Resene Colorwood Shade. These different colours, along with the room divider, break up the space, showing that even a small room can be turned into something a little more special. Try being smart with furniture too, this fold-out desk doubles as a table, storing away when not in use, and the same with the fold out couch.

Have a go at sectioning off areas with Resene wood stains using different shades, such as Resene Colorwood tinted to Resene Natural, Resene Dark Rimu, Resene Dark Oak and Resene Pitch Black.
