Making an entrance: Ashburton Domain gates restored

At an impressive 124 years old, Ashburton Domain gates had never been fully restored – aside from small fixups when things were looking shabby. The Finishing Co. recently stepped in to refresh and renew the gates and columns adding a unique and authentic touch with the help of Resene.
Firstly, high-pressure water blasting was needed on site to clean up. The gates were lifted off and sand blasted back to raw wrought iron for preparation. The first coat applied was Resene ArmourZinc 120 as a primer, followed by Resene Armourcote 510 and two coats of Resene Uracryl in the shade Resene Black.
To really highlight the original details, Resene Energy Yellow was used to re-paint the numbers and circle on the gates, creating a stunning contrast against the Resene Black.
The gates are now painted in Resene Black with a contrasting Resene Energy Yellow highlighting the original numbers.
The columns were finished with a ROCKCOTE rendering, renewing their glory and pairing well with the crisp Resene Black gates.
“The project involved tremendous logistics – and good old Kiwi initiative,” says Craig Bishop, director of The Finishing Co. The restored gates now look superb, inviting guests into the treasured domain. Next time you’re in Ashburton be sure to check it out for yourself.
