There’s no place like the beach: DIY beach sign

06 Dec 2023

If you have a beachy vibe going on at home, or have a family bach near the coast, then this fun beach sign could be the perfect addition to your space. Use wood stains like we did for a natural, rustic look, or choose your favourite and most colourful Resene shades to make it really pop on your wall!

You will need:

  • 4x pieces of pine, 50cm long, 35mm wide and 1cm thick
  • Pencil
  • Fine paintbrush
  • String or rope
  • Drill
  • Resene testpot paintbrush
  • Resene Colorwood beachwashed stains in shades of your choice. We used Resene Whitewash and Resene Rising Tide
  • Resene testpots in colours of your choice for the letters. We used Resene Bluff and Resene Alabaster

Step 1: Stain your boards in your chosen Resene Colorwood beachwashed stains.

Step 2: With a pencil, write your letters onto the board. You can use the same words as we did, or get creative and come up with your own beachy message!

Step 3: Paint over your letters using a fine paintbrush. We used Resene Bluff and Resene Alabaster for the letters.

Step 4: Drill two holes in each side of the boards. We did this 2.5cm in from the edge and 3cm from the top and bottom.

Step 5: Starting at the bottom, thread the piece of rope or string through and tie a knot at the back then continue to thread the rope through all the holes allowing a long piece of string for hanging at the top.

Step 6: Hang your sign on the wall and enjoy your crafty work.

Top tip: If you’re keen to display your sign outside, use Resene Waterborne Woodsman or Resene Woodsman Whitewash in place of Resene Colorwood.
