Wood you like a Christmas stocking? How to make these colourful stocking decorations for Christmas

01 Dec 2022

These wooden stockings are the perfect Christmas decoration to hang above your fireplace. You can use any Resene colour you like and get creative with mixing colours and adding patterns to suit your home and palette, Fleur used Resene Hot Chile and Resene Black to create these ones.

You will need:

  • Wood
  • Jig saw or band saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Resene testpot paints in your choice of colours; Fleur used Resene Hot Chile and Resene Black
  • Paintbrush
  • Container for mixing paint in
  • Cloth or rag
  • Resene FX Paint Effects medium
  • Resene Colorwood Natural Wood Stain in Teak
  • Resene Aquaclear Natural
  • Electric drill
  • Small metal hooks and eyes

Step 1: Use a jig saw or band saw to cut out some over-sized sock shapes.  Sand any rough areas smooth with sandpaper.

Step 2: Use a small container to make a 50/50 mix of Resene FX Paint Effects medium with your chosen paint colour, Fleur used Resene Hot Chile. Mix well and use a paintbrush to paint it on your stockings, then use an old cloth or rag to wipe it off again.

Step 3: Use a cloth to rub on some Resene Colorwood Natural wood stain in the colour Resene Teak around the edges of the stockings to add some shading and depth.

Step 4: Paint on a small amount of a contrasting paint colour to the very edge of the stockings then rub away any excess paint with a cloth or rag, Fleur used Resene Black for her edges. Once the paint is dry, finish by sealing the wood with Resene Aquaclear Natural.

Step 5: Use an electric drill to drill some pilot holes into the top of each stocking, then screw in a metal eye hook. With a corresponding hook drilled in the underside of the mantle, hang your stockings up. Fleur has placed them above her mantle, stencilled in Resene Half Rice Cake and Resene Rhino. Wall painted in Resene Half Rice Cake.
